Professional statement

Brooke A. Finley, PhD, DNP, PMHNP-BC, RN, CARN-AP is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and doctorally-prepared, dual board-certified psychiatric mental health and addiction nurse practitioner who specializes in helping people live fully without psychiatric medication. Currently, she has a private practice in New York State where she conducts in-person individual and group psychotherapy while providing high-quality virtual mental health care to patients across the United States. Dr. Finley truly enjoys deeply understanding clients and helping them live meaningful, deep, rich, and satisfying lives.

She graduated from the highly-ranked University of Arizona (UA) Bachelor of Science in Nursing program with a psychology minor. After graduation, she worked as a board-certified psychiatric mental health registered nurse and supervisor in psychiatric hospitals helping adults and children. While working as a registered nurse, she continued her studies at UA, earning a Master of Science in Nursing (psychiatric mental health across the lifespan focus) and later two doctorates, a Doctor in Nursing Science (Ph.D.) and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). As an independently-licensed provider, Brooke has cared for many different types of clients from all walks of life, but has significant experience working with executives, healthcare professionals, first responders, artists, and college students. Of note, she was a provider at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona, a world-class holistic treatment center.

She has extensive psychotherapy training in multiple modalities (ACT, CBT, DBT, EMDR, MBSR, REBT), but primarily utilizes what she considers the most effective long-term treatment, which is psychoanalytic psychotherapy. She completed fellowships at the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY; affiliated with New York University) and the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center (SDPC).

Dr. Finley resides in the Finger Lakes region of New York State where she enjoys cooking, reading, being in nature, gardening, music, art, and caring for animals on her off-grid woodland homestead.

Message to clients

I believe having a real, therapeutic human relationship with a highly trained and devoted clinician allows people to access their innate ability to understand their soul and truly heal. How do I know? Well, I have seen and tried it all and have actual proof of the methods that have helped me and those I have cared for live a deep, peaceful, and meaningful life filled with integrity, authenticity, caring, and self-efficacy. It is an honor to continue the legacy of the healers in my life. As you may know from physical injuries, healing is not without pain and patience. Respectively, I don’t believe that quick-fix therapies and pills help heal the root causes of psychic suffering. Often, while these approaches may help you feel better short-term (or not), they often deny your own pain and leave you right where you began, or even worse off.

While I welcome patients who are currently taking psychotropic medication, my personal approach is to have patients taper off or reduce psychiatric drugs and substances (e.g., alcohol, drugs) that mask pain and delay healing. In short, I rarely prescribe medications unless absolutely necessary and if the benefits outweigh the risks with the end purpose of engaging more deeply in therapy. It should be explicitly known that I cannot continue or newly prescribe addictive/controlled substances such as stimulants (e.g. Adderall), pain medication (i.e. Lyrica), and sedatives/benzodiazepines (e.g. Ambien, Xanax, Valium, etc.).

I look forward to meeting you.
