Professional statement

Dr. Achina Stein is a psychiatrist and Functional Medicine doctor providing therapy, medication management, and Functional Medicine services in East Providence, RI. She received the RI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2008 from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and has also been recognized as Best in Medicine by the American Health Council.

Dr. Stein uses Functional Medicine to help patients find the underlying causes of illness, including anxiety and depression, and the nutritional and biochemical imbalances that may be contributing to them. Functional Medicine is personalized medical approach that uncovers the root cause of disease instead of focusing on the suppression of symptoms. Dr. Stein searches for underlying triggers that are contributing to a patient's illness through lab testing and tailored interventions that may include diet, dietary supplements, lifestyle changes, and medications. Her goal is to treat the illness in the least invasive way to help the patient's body restore balance. She seeks to promote wellness and create hope, health and healing by partnering with patients.

Dr. Stein is board certified in both Psychiatry and Integrative Holistic Medicine. She completed a medical internship and psychiatric residency affiliated with the medical school at Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Cherry Hill, NJ where she was the Chief Resident during her final year. Since her training, she worked in the public sectors of mental health for over 20 years, 5 years of which were at East Bay Center in Barrington, RI as Medical Director. Dr. Stein was also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University from 2002 to 2013.

Client testimonials

Parent of a Client

Dr. Stein has dramatically improved the quality of my young adult son’s life. He had been struggling for many years with weaning himself off of an SSRI he had been prescribed since childhood. Every time he reduced his dosage, he experienced debilitating side effects of depression, anxiety, and unpredictable anger. Although he had worked with a number of board certified psychopharmacologists over the years, Dr. Stein took a unique approach to his situation. She combined her knowledge of functional medicine and psychiatry to create a plan for my son, which included diet changes, natural supplements, and eventually a small dose of a different SSRI to help him reach his goal. He is now off of all traditional medication, and is anxiety and depression free. He is physically healthier than he has been in years. I can’t thank Dr. Stein enough for healing my son, and enabling him to pursue his career and personal goals without being encumbered by anxiety and depression. In addition to being a grateful parent, I have been a professional psychotherapist (LICSW) working in a private practice for over thirty years, and I can enthusiastically attest to the remarkable intelligence, compassion, and effectiveness of Dr. Stein’s work.

Educator

Dr. Stein has helped me improve emotionally, mentally, and physically through her thoughtful, comprehensive care. She uses a combination of cognitive behavior therapy, emotions-based therapy, and integrative medicine to move me into a better headspace. We have also greatly reduced the amount of medications that I am taking. Dr. Stein has replaced them with proper supplementation and diet recommendations, both of these have improved my body and mind. She is dedicated, always thinking about her patients, sending additional information, videos, and reading material that would help with my physical medical concerns and mental health. Her referrals to other providers have also been a force of change in my life. Dr. Stein’s network of fellow providers in different medical specialties is truly unparalleled. I recommend Dr. Stein without reservation or feedback for improvement. I think she does a great job.

Patient

I’ve seen Dr. Stein for over four years. She’s been able to put together so many pieces that others have missed —functionally, holistically, and conventionally. Her creativity, compassion, intuition, and intelligence are all superb. Her ability to look at issues from so many different angles increases chances of success. While I prefer a holistic approach it is great having the balanced integrative approach as needed.

28 Year Old Graduate Student

Dr. Stein recognized cognitive patterns I have formed over the years which have been the source of my depression and anxiety. With her help, I have been able to get off medication and learned to better cope with these mental disorders.

Mother

She has helped improve my son’s mental health symptoms- depression and anxiety. She took the time to determine what was going on in his brain and body through a variety of tests and took steps to correct them. We are noticing that tics are more reduced, too.

RISD alum

For years I went from one doctor to the next and every single one of them stated there was nothing they could do to relieve a bunch of symptoms that were making my life debilitating. I started seeing Dr. Stein and within a few months I felt so much better and in less than a year, all my symptoms were gone. Dr. Stein is probably the most competent, knowledgeable, and caring physician I have ever seen as a patient.

Professional woman

Dr. Stein helped resolve a particularly difficult case of colitis. She listened and helped get to the underlying cause of the problem. After three years of horrible symptoms, I am finally symptom free.
