Professional statement

Dr. Amy Funkenstein is an Adult, Adolescent, and Child psychiatrist in Belmont, MA. She specializes in anxiety disorders, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Trichotillomania, panic disorders, and phobias, and sees clients for other common mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. She works with children, parents of children (for parent guidance), and young adults (up to 26 years old).

Dr. Funkenstein believes that medication management is most powerful when in conjunction with therapy or another evidence-based treatment option. She uses Exposure Therapy with Response Prevention for Obsessive Compulsive Behavior, Habit Reversal Therapy for Trichotillomania, and goal-oriented supportive therapy with behavioral components for other mental health issues. She is committed to involving members of the family or other supports in order to help patients move in a healthy direction, as she believes each individual is part of a greater system.

Prior to starting private practice, Dr. Funkenstein worked at Tufts Medical Center, Rhode Island Hospital Young Adult Behavioral Health Program, and Bradley Hospital. She completed her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital (Brown University Medical School) and her Adult Psychiatry Residency at Cambridge Health Alliance (Harvard Medical School).

Message to clients

I am committed to my patients to see their lives improve through a compassionate, straight-forward approach. I'm happy to work with individuals alone but I'm also happy to involve family in order to move the family system or the patient in a healthy direction. I believe every individual is part of a greater system, and in order for individuals to improve quickly and with sustainability, the system around the person often needs treatment. This often means I see children as the primary patient but mostly see them with their parents, and then their parents alone either for individual or couples therapy, and I will often prescribe for the parents if they need treatment. I found this more holistic approach to treating children (and often college students) produces behavior and mood/anxiety changes that are longer-lasting and more powerful.
I believe in the power of medication management but think it is an adjunctive therapy to the primary treatment which is the evidence based treatment for whatever the patient is struggling with. For OCD, this is exposure with response prevention, for Trichotillomania, this is habit reversal therapy, and for existential issues, it's goal-oriented, supportive therapy with behavioral components as needed.

Impulse control issues - Including hair pulling, nail biting, skin picking

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) - Using exposure and response prevention to help clients confront OCD, e.g. concern with and/or fear of germs and becoming 'contaminated'

Trichotillomania - Habit Reversal Therapy for recurrent, irresistible urges to pull out body hair (e.g. eyelashes, eyebrows, hair)

Parenting - Helping parents with their own issues while supporting children

Perfectionism - Working on shifting mindsets that refuse to accept any standard short of perfection

Existential challenges / crises - Questioning purpose, spirituality, existence; finding one’s path and voice, especially when it differs from society's expectations

Dr. Funkenstein is one of the most incredible physicians I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Her knowledge of psychopharmacology is extensive and her ability to connect with patients and families is profound. She carries my highest recommendation. I would refer clients to her for OCD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and psychopharmacology.

Client testimonials

Anonymous client

Dr. Funkenstein quite literally helped turn our family’s life around. We came to Massachusetts from Kansas for 3 months when our twin daughters were 11 for help with their OCD. Dr. Funk introduced ERP to us in the treatment of OCD, which helped to restore them! She not only helped them fight their OCD, but got “down and dirty” doing exposures right alongside them! She felt more like a cheerleader for them than a doctor! She also gave me the kind of help I had never had for my OCD while they were getting treatment! Our family will never be the same after working with her! Thank you Dr. Funk!
