Professional statement

Dr. Crystal Tholany is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in Brooklyn. She works with adults over 18. Many of Dr. Tholany’s clients come for treatment because they are struggling with anxiety, depression, relationship challenges or self-defeating patterns. Some note that they already have an intellectual understanding of the root of their problems, but find that this awareness has not helped to alleviate their suffering or improve their behaviors and symptoms.

Dr. Tholany is trained in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. However, she tailors her approach to fit the needs of the person she is working with. Initially she and a potential client will touch base by phone. If it seems like a potential fit, then they proceed with two or three sessions in consultation. During the consultation process, the client discusses their reasons for coming for treatment and Dr. Tholany will gather more history. Next they discuss a plan that includes how frequently to meet for therapy and if medication could be of benefit in conjunction with therapy.

Dr. Tholany graduated from Rutgers Medical School (formerly New Jersey Medical School). She completed Psychiatry Residency and an Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at NYU. In 2011 she initiated psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Association of New York. She graduated from PANY in 2018. She remains as faculty, teaching and supervising residents in psychodynamic psychotherapy. She has been in practice since 2011 and currently sees clients exclusively online.

Message to clients

It is incredibly meaningful for me to witness and participate in this amazing process that unfolds in which you come to know yourself and your stories in an increasingly complex and nuanced way. I recognize and respect the courage it takes for you to choose to be here with me, undertaking this journey. Because it can be challenging even as it is joyous, empowering and revelatory.

I seek to provide an environment for each client that fosters curiosity and acceptance. I view therapy as a collaborative effort, encouraging my clients to freely express whatever comes to mind as best as they can. While listening, I attend to their words, various other cues, and also to my own thoughts, imagery and feelings that are stirred up in the moment. In the exchange that ensues, experiences that may previously have only been felt but never spoken begin to find words. This process can help to contain experiences that previously felt too intense to bear. This serves to enhance your ability to be with, think about, and to attach words to difficult experiences. This process leads to the ability to better regulate your emotions and to expand the nuance and complexity of your thinking. This can lead to relief from suffering in all of its various forms.
