Professional statement

Elliot Feld, MD (he/him) is a board-certified psychiatrist and therapist at Sapien Psychiatry in North Providence, Rhode Island. As a medical physician who also provides talk therapy, Dr. Feld offers a holistic and integrated approach to mental health treatment.

The mind and the body are two sides of the same coin. Simultaneous treatment of both mind and body is essential for positive outcomes. By combining medication with talk therapy, and knowing when and how to use either, or both, of these tools -- depending on the person and their circumstances -- Dr. Feld focuses on treating individuals.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each of us has a unique set of life experiences. We are all products of our biology, our psychology, our upbringing, and our environment. And yet, we all have different experiences of culture, religion, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, relationships... the list goes on. To better understand these factors, and how they contribute to our pains or our strengths, is to better understand ourselves. And to better understand ourselves is to create a path towards healing.

The name "Sapien Psychiatry" refers to "Homo sapiens," which is the scientific name of our species. "Homo sapiens" means "wise humans." Every one of us is a wise human... our experience of consciousness sets us apart from all other creatures on Earth. Mentally, we are capable of great things. Unfortunately, we are also capable of great suffering. By considering all of our available tools (medicine, cognitive therapy) and tapping into our innate human wisdom (social connection, nutrition, exercise, circadian rhythm), we can use our wisdom to achieve wellness.

Message to clients

When someone leaves my office for the first time, my goal is for them to feel like they've been heard, they've been understood, they're working with someone who is taking a thoughtful look at the whole picture, and their treatment plan has been set in motion.

That treatment plan can include many different parts. Medication can be an important part of that plan for some people, but it's not for everyone. Maybe you've never tried medication before and aren't sure if it's right for you. Or maybe you've tried many different medications without meaningful results. Either way, you're in the right place.

Sometimes, talk therapy can help in ways that medication simply cannot. Let's talk about what therapy might look like for you. There are many different types of therapy, which is why I start with the person in front of me and find the therapy that works best for them.

If you're interested in potentially working together, please message me on Zencare or call my office number at Sapien Psychiatry and leave me a voicemail. We can then schedule a free introductory phone call -- for me to get a better sense of what you're looking for, and for you to get a better sense of me and how I work. It's important that you feel we are a good fit (and if not, that's okay) -- and, equally important is confirming whether I have the right skill set to help you with your unique circumstances.
