Professional statement

Dr. Lila Flavin is a psychiatrist based in Providence, RI and Boston, MA. Her practice has a particular emphasis on college-age students, pregnant people and new parents, and LBTQ+ individuals. She really enjoys creating a place that is free of shame to discuss hard topics like addiction, sexuality and ambivalence around pregnancy and parentings.

Dr. Flavin can either provide joint medication medication and psychotherapy or work together with a therapist to provide a team approach. Regarding medication, Dr. Flavin appreciates that there is no one right answer regarding medication and is open to working together to find a regimen that works best. For therapy, she targets present moment problems and ways to navigate a crisis or strong emotional reaction. As the crisis resolves, it's often possible to broaden the work and understand larger patterns that are informed by the past. Dr. Flavin also has special training in treating trauma with EMDR whereby the patient reprocesses the trauma and develops a new narrative regarding the event.

Dr. Flavin completed medical school at Tufts University School of Medicine. She completed psychiatry at NYU and did a year of specialized training in addiction at Brown University. She is currently an attending psychiatrist as Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Flavin works primarily remotely, however, she has limited availability for in-person appointments in Boston and Providence when needed.

Message to clients

After you reach out, I will schedule a brief 15-minute call to learn more about you. If we are a good fit for one another, I will schedule you for a 60-minute intake session. During the initial session, I will ask lots of questions about what is bothering you now, what you've tried, and how long you've been struggling. I will ask about your family, your past, and what's been helpful or not helpful. At the end of the session, I will share my impression of what I think might be going on. This can include a diagnosis and a recommendation regarding mediations. If you are interested in therapy, we will discuss areas of focus for our sessions. We will find a frequency to meet together and discuss details such as cancellations and billing.

I always tell people that it's incredibly important that you feel that your therapist or psychiatrist really wants to understand you and cares about you. Regardless of who you work with, I hope you find this kind of relationship!
