Professional statement

Dr. Robert Kitts is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who has been working in the Boston area for over 15 years. He works primarily with young adults (ages 18 to 35 y/o), including college students, graduate students and recent graduates. He provides therapy, medication management, or both. Dr. Kitts draws from a number of approaches in order to best meet the needs of his clients, including cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, positive psychology, and supportive therapy, as well as mindfulness practices.

Dr. Kitts focuses on clients dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, LGBTQ+ issues, college health, school and work burnout, academic issues, and existential challenges.

Dr. Kitts went to Cornell University for his undergraduate degree and then obtained his medical degree in Syracuse, NY, at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He completed his General Psychiatry Residency at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon, and then returned back to the Northeast to complete his Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at Boston Children's Hospital 2007-2009. Prior to focusing more on his private practice, he worked at Boston Children's Hospital, Mass General Hospital, and was an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Currently, in addition to his private practice, Dr. Kitts is a psychiatrist at Boston College and InStride Health.

Message to clients

Thank you for considering working with me. I am a psychiatrist who loves psychotherapy and working with patients holistically. My focus is on young adults from 18 years-old to 35 years-old, but I have an added developmental perspective from my additional child and adolescent psychiatry background. I aim to understand my clients to the best of my abilities to ensure you feel heard and to guide our treatment approach. I practice with respect, warmth, authenticity, and compassion.

As part of my practice, I work with individuals who just want therapy, just want medication management, those who want both, and those who are not sure what they need. Similarly, I am flexible as to whether you would like to meet in person, via zoom, or a combination. I work as a team and incorporate different aspects of psychotherapy that best fits your needs. Please feel free to contact me if you feel like we may be a good fit and you would like further information.

Professional endorsements

"Dr. Kitts is one of the most thoughtful and invested psychiatrists I have ever met and worked with. His style is warm and accessible despite his extensive knowledge and expertise. He keeps updated on the latest research findings and treatment trends on a regular base. Dr. Kitts takes the time to know his clients in the context of their lives and makes careful treatment recommendations in partnership with his clients and their families. Even though the expertise of psychiatrists is to prescribe psychotropic medication, through his intimate knowledge of the American Psychiatric Association’s practice guidelines, Dr. Kitts will consider alternative explanations and treatments for his clients’ struggles, if those approaches will lead to the best outcomes with the least side effects. For all those reasons, Dr. Kitts is a great clinician and therapist."

"Dr. Kitts has been helping our adolescent son cope with a difficult transition during the last 3 three years. My son liked him right away, and he treats our whole family like caring individuals who all matter in the course of our son’s care. We have never felt talked down to, and our thoughts and feelings have never been disregarded. I find his candor and empathy to be unfortunately rare."
