Dr. Sukumar Rao is a board-certified Adult Psychiatrist in New York City, who provides both talk therapy and if needed, medication management. He specializes in trauma, complicated medical and neurologic situations (e.g. lung, heart or gastrointestinal conditions, chronic or terminal illness, etc.), anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and personality struggles.
Dr. Rao offers both insight and goal-oriented treatment approaches, including Psychodynamic Therapy, Supportive Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, and Mindfulness Practices. He first helps his patients alleviate their most intense symptoms before working with them to set broader goals. He also looks at the big picture by helping individuals make lifestyle changes and determine what would make their life more meaningful. When working with patients with a history of trauma, Dr. Rao makes a concerted effort to establish a safe and supportive space. He aims to help them reach a point where they are able to talk about things that are really difficult.
Dr. Rao has studied and trained at Columbia and Cornell Universities, and he is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center. His work in academic circles has informed his private practice and allows him to stay at the forefront of modern psychiatry.
