Professional statement

Aaron Newman is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with an office centrally located in the historic Flat Iron District of Manhattan. Aaron has over 30 years of experience working with individuals, couples and families who struggle with intense mood states such as anxiety and depression, stress or interpersonal conflicts that arise from major life transitions or change. He has provided training, supervision and clinical vision to mental health clinics serving families and children throughout New York City and Westchester and has promoted the philosophy of trauma informed and client centered care both for his own practice as well as for other practitioners.

Using Cognitive Behavioral therapy techniques, Aaron will help you understand connections between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You will learn practical coping strategies and ways to manage your own mood states. Aaron strongly believes in the role of psychoeducation - not only building coping skills with his clients but making sure that they understand the psychological, or neurobiological concepts behind those techniques. He has post Masters Training in Family Therapy and is influenced by Systems Theory.

Taking an integrated, holistic approach to understanding how our moods effect us in our bodies and how mal adaptive coping strategies such as over eating, poor sleep hygiene or abuse of substances may affect our emotions, Aaron treats the whole person. Aaron also brings mindfulness practices into the room by taking clients through breathing and relaxation exercises. With his enormous amount of experience in working with people going through life transitions, he is a highly skilled therapist who brings compassion, transparency, hope and a sense of humor to all his clients.

Message to clients

I am a clinical social worker with over thirty years of experience working with adults, couples, and families. I see my role as your therapist is to compassionately support your personal growth through the use of empirically supported interventions and to promote practical coping strategies to handle life's many stressors. I provide culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care, and welcome clients of all ages, genders and sexual identities. The values of transparency, empathy, and the validation of your personal truth are essential components of my model of care and I treat my clients as partners in creating their own creative solutions to life's many challenges.

As a native New Yorker, I have worked with clients of all socio- economic and cultural groups residing throughout the mosaic of the New York Metropolitan Area.

I utilize evidence based approaches to provide practical solutions, strategies for managing life's challenges and symptom relief. I view all of us as part of systems, whether that be familial, professional, or social and we are all impacted by issues of racial, gender, and economic inequities. I emphasize the connections between our emotional and physical wellness, and provide holistic, person centered care. I enjoy working with children and their families to improve communication and assist them in weathering life transitions such as loss, divorce, and the creation of new or blended families.
