Professional statement

Adam Whiteley is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with adult individuals both in person and virtually who are currently residing in Michigan. Adam works with folk from all backgrounds and identities who are or have experienced stress, overwhelm, and trauma. Adam tends to work with folk who would like to explore or utilize body-oriented therapies as a pathway to reconnecting and embodying their physical self and moving towards renegotiating trauma.

Drawing directly on trauma-informed practices, attachment-based, and somatic-focused therapy. Working collaboratively with clients Adam creates a safe and comfortable space to work in partnering with clients to use their own expertise in their lived experience to guide the conditions to support the individual towards healing, well-being, and growth.

Adam has worked in private practice for three years and is currently in training for certification in Somatic Experiencing, from Somatic Experiencing International, and for certification in Psychedelic Harm Reduction and Integration from Fluence Training.

With an office located conveniently downtown in Nickels Arcade adjacent to UM's central campus, Adam also works with clients virtually who are currently residing in Michigan.

Message to clients

We all need our stories to be heard, seen, and understood. the story of our body is no different, but so often in the dominant culture of today, we have been taught explicitly and implicitly not to listen to it. It can be so hard given the demands and expectations that we place on ourselves, and that others place on us, to slow down and listen to what our own bodies are telling us. And for many of us, it can feel completely new and different to do so at all, especially in therapy. I work with clients to help foster the conditions to support the body's own innate capacity and drive to move toward wellness and healing. And I do so in a way that is not manualized or prescribed, but in collaboration and partnership with the client, to find a path towards healing that feels right, and safe to them. Slowing down and listening can be scary, there are usually some pretty good reasons we haven't been able to do so, or haven't wanted to in the past. And you don't need to do it alone.

Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse

Childhood trauma - Learning how traumatic events in childhood can translate into adulthood; processing through difficult memories with the goal of moving past the experience and lingering symptoms
