Professional statement

Akilah Sigler is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in New York, who specializes in helping individuals overcome the disruptive impacts of trauma, depression, anxiety, and disordered eating. Many of Akilah’s clients come to therapy feeling stuck despite having a lot of insight into their trauma, depression, disordered eating, and/or anxiety. Akilah works with folks feeling stuck to facilitate change from a trauma-informed, evidence-based, anti-oppressive framework. Akilah is especially committed to serving the QTBIPOC community and loves working with people who are grappling with what healing and wellness mean in a world where trauma and oppression are ongoing.

Akilah is a Certified Body Trust® provider who is also trained in EMDR (a therapy that can reduce the impact of trauma symptoms). She uses these trainings and a variety of therapeutic techniques to help people move toward more connection, rootedness, and peace in life. Akilah is skilled at identifying stuck points and using her client’s strengths to help overcome them. As a Body Trust® provider, Akilah loves working with people on improving their relationship to food and their body with size equity and inclusivity in mind. She is attuned to how identity shapes our experience, including the conversation that unfolds in therapy, and is dedicated to exploring this with clients.

Outside of private practice, she enjoys cooking, reading fiction, being in nature, and if we're being real, reality tv.

Message to clients

If you're considering reaching out, I'd love to schedule a complimentary 20-minute consultation to discuss what you're hoping to achieve through therapy. Before beginning therapy with me, it's important to note that our first 2-3 sessions may differ from the subsequent ones. During our initial meetings, I typically ask a lot of broad questions and gather information about your history to gain a comprehensive picture before diving into the main therapy process. Following the introductory sessions, our focus will shift to the topic that brought you to therapy and addressing any goals you have. This also gives us a valuable checkpoint to ensure that after we meet and talk, our sessions still feel like a good fit for your needs.
