Professional statement

Akilah Sigler is a licensed Mental Health Counselor based in New York and working with adults. Akilah's style is characterized as warm, customized, and collaborative. She is committed to the continuous learning and unlearning that enables her to be responsive to the needs of her communities, particularly BIPOC & TGNC/LGB+ clients. Many of her clients come to therapy feeling stuck, uncertain, uneasy, or depressed. Akilah works with clients to contextualize these experiences fostering deeper insight, creative responses, meaning, and connection. She believes that therapeutic work extends beyond the therapy session and emphasizes systemic responses to systemic injustice.

Akilah has received basic-training in EMDR, which uses bilateral stimulation to decrease the after-effects of trauma. She is currently completing certification with The Center for Body Trust where she has built on a foundation that includes and affirms bodies of all sizes in the pursuit of quality healthcare. Akilah's perspective and work are influenced by Audre Lorde, Tressie McMillan Cottom, Aubrey Gordon, Dr. Ken Hardy, and many more who have contributed to intersectional, feminist thought.

Akilah is drawn to therapy for its respect of the depth, scope, and complexities of all people. Outside of private practice, she enjoys cooking, being in nature, reading, learning user experience design, and if we're being real, reality tv.

Message to clients

If you're considering reaching out, I'd be delighted to schedule a complimentary 20-minute consultation to discuss what you're hoping to achieve through therapy. Before beginning therapy with me, it's important to note that our first 2-3 sessions may differ from the subsequent ones. During our initial meetings, I typically ask a lot of broad questions and gather information about your history to gain a comprehensive picture before diving into the main therapy process. Following the introductory sessions, our focus will shift to the topic that brought you to therapy and addressing any goals you have. This also gives us a valuable checkpoint to ensure that after we meet and talk, our sessions still feel like a good fit for your needs.
