Professional statement

Alan Harvey, LMSW (He/Him) is a queer, Latino therapist licensed in New York and working at The Sexuality, Attachment, and Trauma Project (SAT Project) in NYC. During Alan's undergrad at New York University, he worked towards becoming an actor and then a playwright. When he graduated, he worked in reality TV up until the pandemic. Alan was motivated to explore the world of social work when I saw how bad mental health was for so many of the people around him, and started working for a homeless outreach team and instantly knew that this was the field he wanted to work in. Alan received his Master's of Social Work from New York University.

Alan's therapy sessions are a place where you can dig deep into your life and explore the emotions and patterns that impact you today. He places a lot of emphasis on your emotions: how you feel during the stories you tell, and what it feels like to be sharing them with me. He brings in elements of talk therapy and attachment theory, emotional processing, mindfulness, coping skills, storytelling, trauma-work and more. Alan specialize in issues surrounding sex and intimacy, anxiety, grief, and trauma, and proudly work with artists and members of the LGBTQ+ community! Alan has psychodynamic training and is an Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) Level 1 therapist.

Alan doesn’t take the same approach with every client, so you’ll join together and tailor an approach specifically for you. That might mean diving deep into your past experiences, learning skills, or even walking together through Central Park. His office is located by Columbus Circle and he has both in-person and virtual availability. Reach out to schedule a free consultation!

Message to clients

Being queer in today’s world can be TOUGH, and constantly having to explain your identity to your therapist definitely doesn’t make it any easier. As a fellow queer, I am passionate about working within the LGBTQ+ community. You may be struggling to find your place in the community or find a support system that feels safe and validating. You may be struggling to figure out your relationships- maybe you are overwhelmed at the thought of finding a partner, maintaining your relationship(s), or managing conflicting sex drives. Or maybe you need an outlet to talk about how much the world can suck and process what that means for you.

I’ll start by spending some time getting to know you. Then we’ll sit down together and come up with a plan that feels right for addressing your needs and goals. I tend to incorporate mindfulness, coping skills, storytelling, trauma-work and more. I come in with an open mind, ready to listen, validate, and challenge or push where necessary.

Therapy isn't easy. If it was, everyone would do it. There will be challenges and laughter, I'll be here with you every step of the way. Let’s schedule a free 20-minute consultation to chat about working together (I know Psychology Today says 15 minutes. I can't change that). I can meet in-person or over video, and I'm available Monday-Friday!
