Professional statement
Alice Mills Mai is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor at Wove Therapy in KTown, Manhattan who specializes in intersectionality, race-related challenges, trauma, incarceration, and working with members of the LGBTQIA community, especially transgender women of color.
Alice has extensive experience helping individuals look at the intersectionality of race, religion, and gender. She also helps individuals through the process of transitioning, including discussing what the changes would mean for them and others in their family; what if their family does not accept them; what does acceptance look like. In addition, she has experience with domestic violence, institutional trauma, and trauma related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or depression. She not only looks at trauma at the individual level but also within communities, including those who are incarcerated or are navigating the legal justice system or immigration.
Alice works predominately from a trauma-informed, relational, and interpersonal orientation. She is constantly thinking about how she can use her power as a therapist to better the relationship and collaborate with her clients. She also reminds her clients that they have choices in the therapist-client relationship and how they want it to look. She also helps her clients improve their relationships in addition to looking at how race, gender, and religion impacts their life. Alice will incorporate elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) when appropriate to give her clients concrete skills, like overcoming negative self-talk, and explore the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. She starts off with building safety and trust and has found that this helps individuals with a history of trauma feel more prepared to speak about their experience(s). If she finds that a client is feeling overwhelmed, she will step in and have them do a breathing exercise or a grounding exercise to slow things down.
Alice believes everyone deserves to live their most authentic life and feel accepted and safe. She is there to support her clients as they embark on a journey towards healing and empowerment. She looks forward to meeting you at her office located in KTown near Herald Square.
