Professional statement

Alison Jost is a Boston area-based Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. She provides video sessions to clients in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Virginia. She specializes in anxiety and panic disorders, perfectionism, college and graduate student mental health, relationship issues (including divorce), grief and loss, and women's issues. Although these are her main areas of focus, she welcomes clients with a wide variety of issues who come from all walks of life.

Alison draws on various therapeutic approaches according to her client's unique interests and needs. In general, she sees therapy as having two parts. One part is gaining insight into why we are who we are. This often involves some exploration of our past. The other part is using these insights to make positive changes -- here and now. This involves learning better ways of coping with stress, clarifying deeply held values, and using mindfulness techniques to relate differently to our thoughts and feelings.

Alison graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a degree in philosophy, and then worked in the field of bioethics for several years. She later worked at the Yale Child Study Center as a research assistant while completing her MSW at nearby Southern Connecticut State University. After graduation, she was selected for a one-year fellowship through Yale's Department of Psychiatry. More recently, she completed a one-year fellowship in psychoanalysis through the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute.

Message to clients

Whether you're struggling with a particular issue, or just curious to understand yourself better, I believe that going to therapy takes enormous courage. I aim to create a warm, down-to-earth, nonjudgmental space where it's okay to express whatever you're thinking or feeling. I believe that humor can be an important part of the therapeutic process, and my clients appreciate that even difficult sessions sometimes include laughter. In working together, over time you'll find that you have better insight into your unique strengths, challenges, ways of thinking, and behavioral patterns. We'll use these insights, in addition to other tools and techniques, to make your life more manageable and fulfilling. I feel deeply honored to work alongside clients as they do the challenging but rewarding work of therapy. If you feel like we would be a good fit in working together, I encourage you to reach out, and I look forward to hearing from you.
