Professional statement

Amber Isham is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Minnetonka, MN. Amber enjoys working with clients of all identities, backgrounds, and cultures. She has extensive experience helping clients break free from habits that aren’t helpful for them, such as maladaptive coping strategies and avoidance tactics such as negative self-talk, impulsivity, reactivity, drinking, using drugs, engaging in toxic relationships, and more. She also helps clients who suffer from anxiety or depression and feel overwhelmed with their mental health. Her clients want to increase the amount of joy that they experience on a daily basis and focus on self-growth so they can have a greater sense of wellbeing into the future.

Amber’s approach to therapy begins with building a strong therapeutic relationship with each client. She takes the time to get to know each person that she speaks with, understanding their past experiences and their current stressors. Throughout the first several sessions, Amber strives to build trust with her clients, which can lead to a greater sense of safety during vulnerable conversations. She practices an evidence-based therapy modalities including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), where clients learn how to increase their distress tolerance and manage difficult emotions, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), where clients clarify their core values and learn to act on those values. Amber helps clients set goals for themselves, including breaking harmful habits. She provides them with the tools they need to leave behind unhealthy behaviors, whether through mindfulness practices or grounding exercises.

Amber earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Kansas and earned a Master’s degree from Argosy University. She has completed intensive training in DBT from the Linehan Institute. She has nearly 20 years of experience working in the mental health field, and offers clients a greater sense of hope and joy in their lives.

Message to clients

Life is hard, sometimes! Therapy provides you with that extra support as well as the opportunity to grow, evolve and learn new ways to cope with life's challenges. I believe the trust and rapport built between a client and therapist forms the foundation of all progress made in therapy. This relationship supports increasing awareness of the present, identifying what is no longer working, setting long term goals and taking small steps toward those goals. Building a life based in vitality, hope and an increased capacity for joy rather than one filled with suffering, avoidance and futility.

Specializing in behavioral therapy, I focus with clients to reduce or cease destructive or ineffective behaviors and increase effective behaviors that are consistent with the client's values and goals. Each client is an individual and, therefore, the therapeutic process must be tailored to fit the needs of each individual.

I have nearly 20 years of experience providing individual therapy, group therapy and couples therapy in community mental health and outpatient settings. I have extensive experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including but not limited to ethnicity, religion, spirituality, socioeconomics, sexual orientation/affectional preference, gender, and mental/physical health.
