Amy McCarthy-James is a social worker in Boston, Back Bay. She works with individuals and adults. Many of Amy’s clients come in to address anxiety, depression, trauma or substance use. Amy is particularly passionate about serving people dealing with challenging transitions who are willing face life's challenges head on, so they can meet their goals and be more aligned with their own values. She also has advanced training in the area of trauma disorders, substance use disorders, generalized anxiety disorders.
Amy is trained in Narrative Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapies and takes a client centered, non-judgmental, harm reductionist approach. When clients first start therapy, Amy seeks to create a safe environment where they feel comfortable sharing the stories that define themselves and their lives. In therapy, she supports clients in rewriting their stories so that strengths and values, rather than problems, become the centerpiece that helps define their identities. This new perspective allows clients to face their problems with a sense of empowerment, and to live a life that is in line with their person they want to be.
Amy received her MSW from Simmons University. Outside of private practice, she enjoys hiking, and spending time with my friends and family. Amy offers in-person and remote therapy sessions. Her office is located off the Arlington St Green Line stop
