Professional statement

Andrea has been a practicing music therapist and verbal psychotherapist for 35 years and focuses on helping people who are personal or professional caregivers, students in college or graduate school, those with creative challenges, and individuals in a stage of life transition. Clinical supervision is also provided to mental health professionals - and at a sliding scale. She tends to work with individuals who are open to reflection and creativity and to examining how the past may be influencing the present. Clients needs absolutely no experience or skill in music making if they are interested in using music to expand their awareness or increase their gratification in living.

Andrea is trained in music therapy and psychoanalytic psychotherapy and has also benefitted from her own extensive psychotherapy. Her own psychotherapy has been key in being able to help others to evolve, feel gratified, and to have real choice in how they approach living. Clients who work with Andrea consistently give feedback that they feel safe, heard, validated, and gently challenged; they report that they feel like they are sitting with a fellow human being and partnering together to make a meaningful life.

Andrea holds a BA from Oberlin college, where she studied psychology and music (vocal arts) in the conservatory of music. She has an MA in music therapy from New York University. She was in the first cohort and received a certificate from the William Alanson White Institute -a NYC psychoanalytic training institute- in Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. She maintains national certification as a Board Certified Music Therapist and a NY State License as a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist; these require yearly continuing professional education.

Andrea offers remote sessions to anyone residing in New York State and currently has some availability.

Message to clients

Hello. I believe that you already have the internal resources that you need to improve your well being. I bring my humanity, education, and experience to partner with you in order bring those resources to fruition. I will help you to suspend judgements and to reflect on motivations. I will offer you ways to utilize music, if you want, and in a way that feels comfortable for you, to improve how you feel in your own skin and with others.

You will find my manner gentle, supportive, honest, and compassionate. When it feels right, I may challenge or nudge you. I will always be open to feedback, so that we are in constant dialogue about how the therapy is progressing.

Sometimes big problems become little when sitting with a therapist to sort things out. Sometimes minor issues become life issues when examining them with a professional. Both experiences can be rich and life altering when working with a therapist who is a good fit for your personality and needs. I encourage you to reach out to explore if we can work well together. Thank you.
