Professional statement

Andrew Lewandowski (he/him or they/them) is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in Providence, Rhode Island. Andrew practices therapy from a client-centered, anti-oppressive lens and he specializes in working with gender and sexual minorities (LGBTQIA+) and people who have experienced complex trauma. He has worked with many different populations, but especially enjoys working with people who have struggled with difficulties related to power and systemic oppression, or who are working through a period of life change.

Andrew's style is warm, relaxed, and affirming, and he highly values balance and flexibility as a clinician. As Andrew leans on dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) for many of his clinical approaches, he often focuses on helping his clients honor and hold space for conflicting feelings, thoughts, and beliefs. Andrew often uses the power of narrative and storytelling to help clients to build insight, to create meaning, and to find acceptance. He believes it is possible to both validate painful life experiences and also acknowledge the need for change. He also focuses on creating meaning and helping clients to live a life aligned with their own values.

Andrew began his career at the VA clinic in Columbus, Ohio; there he worked with individuals who were experiencing ongoing difficulties with stable housing, as well as with substance use and a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses. During his first few years in Rhode Island, he worked at Thundermist Health Center on the Trans Health Access Team.

Message to clients

Hello and congratulations on taking the first step toward therapy. If you're thinking about making life changes, or if you're simply unhappy and you aren't sure why, it can be very helpful to have someone in your life who is there to be non-judgmental and who will keep your best interests in mind. I work hard to be someone you can trust and be your authentic self with, and I would like to collaborate with you to help you grow at your own pace. If we begin the process of psychotherapy together, I hope to help you live a life that is in line with your goals and values. I will always support you in finding your own answers and truths to many of life's challenges.

In the past I've worked with many people with beliefs or approaches to life that are uncommon or "different." I have often worked with artists, gamers, and activists, and with folks who don't feel like they want to live a more normative lifestyle. If this describes you, then we might work well together. My background in writing, spirituality, and existential philosophy also informs my work and clinical approach.

I do not keep a waitlist as I am unable to offer a realistic assessment of when I will have availability. However, you are welcome to contact me and I will let you know when my availability is updated.
