Professional statement

Ann Akers is a New York State licensed psychoanalyst practicing in New York City. She is currently working remotely. She has a background in teaching clinical skills in a doctoral program, and has been working for 44 years as a therapist and pastoral counselor, with people in a wide range of ages and emotional/life issues. She has a special interest and experience in trauma, e.g. childhood, spiritual and religious, tragic events, etc.

The Internal Family Systems model she works in provides a healing pathway towards freeing traumatized and vulnerable parts into a more harmonious life. She works with those parts that work hard to manage life and who may be exhausted from their hard work. The inner critic who can be harsh with negative beliefs can also be softened towards making space for access to self-confidence, trusting one's decisions and selecting healthier relationships.

Ann believes that each person has innate goodness that has been over-shadowed by woundedness and negative self-beliefs and is honored by each person's courage to seek healing and self-discovery.

Message to clients

Looking for and finding someone with whom you can share the tenderness of your heart and not be judged is so helpful and healing. I appreciate the courage it takes to trust another person with the truth of your experience and emotions without the burden of having to perform or be someone you're not. Sometimes it can take a while to trust but with commitment and consistency, trust will grow.

Therapy can be a place of truth-telling that is often rare in relationships: relationships that often mean well but hold an agenda that can block your being authentic. I offer space and presence to welcome all the parts that have long been squished into silence for fear of being rejected, shamed, or humiliated. Giving them an opportunity to be seen and known can bring such relief towards living freely and more unburdened.

If you are holding long-standing experiences of traumatic history, therapy in a safe space is a gift to give yourself. And it's never too late! This inner work is both psychological and spiritual. I have no "religious" agenda but an appreciation for how the mystery of love, healing and self-care can transform the ways you see yourself and live your life.
