Professional statement

Ariel VanDoren is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Washington, DC who specializes in family issues, trauma, anxiety, and depression. Clients who seek Ariel’s care are noticing that events from their past are starting to impact decision-making, relationships, or work-life balance. Others may be experiencing intense feelings that cause them to freeze when facing life transitions such as dating, applying to graduate school, switching careers/getting a new job or pregnancy/becoming a parent.

Ariel’s approach to treatment is rooted in both Relational theories (psychodynamic, attachment theory, object relations) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). She helps clients to understand, highlight, and create a narrative for past events that have occurred, in order to process experiences and connect them to the present. She’ll often suggest a blend of modalities depending on the client’s needs, which may include techniques from CBT or mindfulness practices to help clients calm themselves down through breathing, getting up and taking a walk, or changing their immediate environment.

It is important to Ariel that each of her clients see tangible progress and growth during their time together, and she will open treatment up to a mix of self-report, open conversation, and clinical assessments as necessary. She deeply believes that each person she works with is capable of growth in order to reach their full potential.

Message to clients

The decision to begin therapy can be exciting, humbling, and empowering – all at the same time. I’ll help you work through your challenges and areas of struggle, as we make progress together toward inner healing and emotional strength. I want to empower you to take charge of your life by creating a narrative that is congruent and reflects your true self.

Especially at the beginning of your therapy journey, it can be difficult pouring your heart out to a therapist, defining your internal truths, and facing your personal weaknesses. I strive to provide a safe, confidential space that is established on a foundation of care, compassion, and trust, giving my patients an encouraging and highly collaborative environment in which we’ll grow together as we connect on a personal level. I cultivate an open environment of honest communication and mutual respect as we progress forward to a place of positive change and personal development.

I truly believe in the power of using a holistic, customized therapy approach that integrates memories and emotions from the past into the present, allowing for full-circle inner healing to take place. Through the process of internally recognizing, not suppressing, your thoughts and emotions, therapy allows you to move forward toward meaningful change and powerful insights rooted in self-awareness. Rather than internalizing your fears and emotions, we’ll work on strategies that allow you to externalize parts of yourself with vulnerability, while avoiding your personal triggers and overcoming self-limiting behavioral patterns.
