Professional statement

Barbara J Lanz - Her best client is someone who has come to the realization that life's not going the way they wanted. Maybe you're in a difficult relationship, difficult job, facing an illness or addiction. You're committed so you won't leave, but happiness....maybe you remember when, but its not now. Feeling trapped is one of the key ingredients for depression. Medication does amazing things but sometimes its not enough, or maybe theres side effects.

Barbara has been through all of that, and experienced amazing healing of her life through counseling. So much so, that she went back to school, got her Bachelors, then Masters and then licensure to be able to help those that are looking for help.

Barbara uses many standard forms of therapy including Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Internal Family Systems, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR has expanded to treat not only traumatic experiences, but depression, anxiety, as well as addiction, both process addiction and substance addiction.

She currently has openings in her Telehealth practice, and has a few slots open weekly for in person therapy in her Jonesborough, TN office. (Note: it is a second story office with outsie steps and no elevator).

Message to clients

I am really passionate about making mental health care available and affordable. I am working on increasing my insurance panels as well as offering Saturday hours. It takes a lot of courage to seek out care, there are many roadblocks to making that first contact. One of the universal beliefs is 'there's something wrong with me.... so I just need to work harder, try harder and pull myself together-- or go to church." All of those are valid ways to feel better and get your life together. But sometimes you need someone to point you in the right direction, give you some information or just walk beside you as sort this life out. You are first a Spirit and you are living in this human body. And it has some really particular ways of coping with life, particularly when stress has been your middle name.

Most of my clients stay in therapy 10-12 weeks, and accomplish the goals we set out on your treatment plan. Sometimes longer therapy is needed particularly for long standing history of control and abuse. And sometimes newI use a variety of assessment tools to make sure we cover all the bases and don't miss anything. I will work at the pace you want to go. It is your therapy. I have experience, knowledge and intuition, but you are the expert on what works for you.
