Professional statement

Barbara Young is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Healdsburg, CA. Barbara works with clients of all ages, including individuals, couples, and families. She welcomes clients who are struggling with their daily lives, unsure what changes to make to feel an improvement in their mental health. They might face trauma, grief or loss, anxiety, or even relationship issues that keep them from feeling like they’re at their best. Couples who would like to improve their communication patterns or resolve difficult conflicts also work with Barbara, as do people who experience low self-esteem or excessive worry.

Barbara’s approach to therapy draws from therapy modalities such as Brainspotting, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, Family Systems therapy, and mindfulness practices. She centers her work with clients around compassionate curiosity and encourages clients to reflect on what’s happening in their lives from a place of self-love as they work out what to do next. Clients learn how to more effectively cope with distress, and to examine the deeper parts of the self that might need acknowledgment and respect.

Barbara earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Meridian University. She is a certified yoga instructor who enjoys bringing mindfulness into her sessions with clients. Barbara also holds certification in Batterers’ Intervention techniques to help those who have engaged in family violence or control, or struggle with anger management. She is a good listener who helps clients find their ways through difficult life moments.

Message to clients

The decision to reach out for counseling is different for everyone, but it is often because something is not working or is overwhelming. It can be a struggle with emotions everyday, an old something that continues to be bothersome, relationships not being what you imagined, or a crisis that is just overwhelming. Whatever the reason you are seeking the assistance of therapy, counseling can often help with the confusion and pain. Thank you for considering me.

Life has an unpredictable way of forcing us to change, course correct, and find the deepest strength within ourselves. You are the expert on your own life. I consider myself as a guide of sorts. In addition to my education and training, I utilize the skills that I have learned through my journeys to help you look at, assess and decision-make in this moment. I am a therapist because I believe that healing is possible and is available to all of us.

You should expect counseling with me to be a gentle landing spot, while also being engaging. You can plan to identify the origins of your stories and bring your whole being--feelings, thoughts, and actions--to the present moment, to be seen, understood, and transformed.
