Professional statement

Berta Garcia Bustamante is a Licensed Master Social Worker based in New York City. She works with individuals, couples and groups across the lifespan, with a focus on professional women. Many of Berta's clients have found amazing success in their careers, but struggle to feel connected in their relationships or at peace in their daily lives. Berta is particularly sensitive to the issues of first-generation immigrant clients, and clients facing moments of transition, like a move to the city, job loss, divorce or breakup; times when the delicate balance feels shaky and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and self-doubt can emerge. Berta identifies as a BIPOC woman, is fluent in Spanish and also works as a divorce & custody coach. She is a member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS).

Message to clients

Let’s return to the ancient science of human connection that our ancestors knew was the way to heal, grow and get momentum for transformational change. I am especially committed to eliminating the scarcity of quality mental healthcare for groups that have been historically marginalized, including people who are caregivers, women, BIPOC, disabled, older, LGBTQ+, or otherwise don’t fit into the tiny boxes our society tends to create and uphold.

Together, we will safely and gently process emotions that connect your past to the here & now so you can increase your capacity to improve your life, on your terms. Imagine what it would be like to discover and amplify what’s already there—an inborn wellness and inherent strength with roots that are spiritual, cultural and unconditional!! It’s such an honor to take this walk toward whole-self wellness with the people I serve.

Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - Healing painful experiences and memories from the past

BIPOC issues - Naming and working through the array of realities for people who are Black, Indigenous or other People of Color.

Relationships - Understanding one’s wants and needs in relationships; exploring patterns of interaction, addressing concerns, and strengthening satisfaction in relationships and dating

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

First gen issues - Addressing the systemic, generational and cultural issues that are particular to people who are immigrants and those who are the first generation born in the U.S.

Fear of failure - Naming and exploring where your fear of failing originates and how it can be transformed to serve you in the here & now.
