Professional statement

Blaine Atkisson is a Licensed Professional Counselor located in the Willow Lawn area of Richmond, VA. Blaine is passionate about supporting clients as they grow their emotional health and wellbeing. This includes learning how to connect with others in meaningful ways, how to effectively manage those difficult emotions, and how to advocate for the self. Many of Blaine’s clients feel anxiety in everyday life that distracts them from what’s important to them. Their insecurities and worries show up in relationships, especially in times of major change. Blaine helps these clients develop the skills they need to reflect on emotional situations and move forward with confidence.

Blaine’s approach to therapy draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Clients learn how to recognize negative thought patterns that are harmful to their emotional state. They also learn how to set boundaries with themselves and others. Blaine teaches clients about attachment theory and encourages them to grow their secure attachment style. Blaine does this in a nonjudgmental, compassionate way.

Blaine earned his Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University. He completed post-graduate work in the areas of addiction and DBT. He is passionate about supporting clients as they grow their emotional health to show up in their own lives confidently, comfortably, and meaningfully.

Message to clients

When thinking about emotional growth, I find it helpful to contrast it with our physical growth. Developing into our full-grown physical selves is a fairly automatic process based upon our genetics. Our emotional growth, however, requires guidance and nurturing from others, typically our caregivers, as we progress from childhood into adulthood. For many of us this process is short circuited, and we can find ourselves navigating a world of relationships and uncertainty without the emotional intelligence needed to recognize and understand our emotions, and to respond to those emotions in healthy and productive ways.

I work with motivated adults on issues primarily revolving around anxiety, relationship difficulties and life transitions. I focus on helping you develop emotional insight in order to guide healthy responses to your emotions. My work also focuses on setting healthy boundaries through self-advocacy, and improving confidence when dealing with uncertainty.

You are the expert on you. I am the expert on developing resiliency and confidence within you. Together, we will develop your repertoire of healthy responses to emotional intensity, nurture the grit necessary to reach your goals, and realize new opportunities for you through improved insight, emotional intelligence and self-advocacy.
