Professional statement

Dr. Bonnie Gorscak is a clinical psychologist with over 30 years of experience treating adults with a broad range of presenting concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-esteem concerns, life transitions, and communication challenges. She specializes in working with grief and loss related disorders, trauma, and complications. For over 20 years, Dr. Gorscak has been part of research team through Columbia University's Center for Prolonged (Complicated) Grief, where she has trained clinicians around the world in an evidence-based approach for helping people deal with even the most devastating losses. In her practice, her compassionate, semi-structured sessions have enabled bereaved, grief-stricken clients to find relief from unrelenting pain, to get "unstuck" and to live more fulfilling lives with renewed hope for their future.

With foundations in humanistic and existential therapies, Dr. Gorscak's sessions are collaborative, transparent, and goal-directed. Psychotherapy can be uncomfortable, even painful, as clients work toward healing change, and Dr. Gorscak works to minimize that discomfort by providing a warm, open, compassionate environment, always respecting her client's perspective and choice when considering interventions. Over many years, working with clients of diverse backgrounds with different needs, Dr. Gorscak has integrated skills from various treatment approaches, including CBT, ACT, MI, EFT, IPT, feminist therapy, psychodrama, relationship enhancement therapy, and others. Dr. Gorscak will assess and discuss with a client which approach/techniques best suit their situation, needs, and personal aspirations.

Dr. Gorscak is licensed in 3 states -NJ, NY, PA, and also has PsyPact authorization to provide services to clients residing in any PsyPact-approved state (most states are; please inquire if your state is approved.) All of Dr. Gorscak's sessions are conducted virtually.

Message to clients

Before scheduling an initial evaluation session, I like to have a (complimentary) phone conversation with you to answer any questions you may have, to give you a felt sense for my style, and to address logistics. During this call, I will conduct a prescreening of your presenting issue and background, and we will decide if it makes sense to proceed together. While I have helped many people over the years and have extensive training and experience, I still am not always the appropriate therapist for every person or issue. If for any reason this is the case, I will try to direct you to other provider(s) who would be better suited for your situation. That said, if we decide to begin work together, through the initial evaluation period of one or two sessions, we will collaboratively determine initial treatment goals and a course of treatment. Typically, I begin treatment with weekly sessions which can shift to every other week after the first treatment period (-1-3 mos) depending upon your individual progress and needs.
