Professional statement

Brett Leimkuhler, Ph.D. is a clinical neuropsychologist whose practice is dedicated to the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of cognitive and emotional disorders, including learning and behavior problems, in adults and adolescents aged 16 years and up. His approach to assessment is based on an understanding of the brain systems that are responsible for one's cognitive strengths and weaknesses, emotional style and behavioral self-regulation.

In addition to conducting neuropsychological evaluations, Dr. Leimkuhler also offers short-term, neuropsychologically-informed counseling for people living with a variety of cognitive challenges and neurodiverse conditions.

Prior to starting his private practice, Dr. Leimkuhler trained and worked for over ten years in adult neurology settings in Boston. He held clinical appointments at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital (now the Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center) and teaching appointments at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Brett Leimkuhler is a licensed psychologist in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He founded The Center for Neuropsychology & Learning Disorders, Inc. in 1990 in Providence, RI and the practice moved to Wakefield, RI in 2005.

New patients are being accepted for evaluations, counseling or both. All sessions are currently conducted online.

Message to clients

I believe that a neuropsychological assessment should provide in-depth understanding of the entire person. The goal is not merely to arrive at a diagnosis, although accurate diagnosis is important. The ultimate goal is to promote deeper self-knowledge and a better understanding of how your particular brain and mind work together.

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, postconcussion syndrome, mood disorder, or other neuropsychological condition, you may have questions about what it means now and in the future, how to manage your treatment, and how to cope with the ongoing challenges at work, in school, and in relationships. Exploring these questions is important as you strive to better understand yourself and to make the necessary adjustments in your life.

My approach to addressing these questions is through short-term, neuropsychologically-informed counseling. Sessions involve discussion, education, emotional support, and practical coaching strategies. Our goal is to construct a new, more positive and hopeful framework in which to understand your strengths and challenges, and to clarify the path to achieving your true potential.
