Professional statement

Carolyn Sandberg Martin is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who welcomes clients across the state of New York to her practice through teletherapy. She also has two physical office locations, in Katonah (Westchester county) and Midtown Manhattan.

Carolyn is a psychotherapist, with a general psychotherapy practice. She has considerable experience helping people with a variety of emotional and behavioral issues. Her specialties include helping people deal with all kinds of relationship issues, such as relationship difficulties with others as well as within themselves, transitional life issues (empty nest, aging, career changes etc.), PTSD (including as a result of chemo and other chronic illnesses), as well as other traumas. She also sees clients grappling with addictions, including food, gambling, sex, as well as alcohol and other substances of abuse. Carolyn also treats people suffering from a variety of mood disorders including generalized anxiety, panic, bipolar disorders and depression.

Her goal is to help her clients identify the external and internal factors that are challenging them, and interfering with their general level of life satisfaction.

Carolyn uses an integrative approach to therapy. She was a pioneer researcher and publisher in the theoretical development of identifying and employing “Bio-Psycho-Social” approaches to the treatment process. Her treatment approach incorporates a blend of traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy techniques (exploration of the unconscious, including dream analysis) and interpersonal psychotherapy. She also uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques, including hypnosis, to help manage day-to-day behaviors that are causing distress. Additionally, she is a trained hypnotherapist, and incorporates, where indicated, hypnotherapy to help clients better manage their anxiety, phobias, as well as certain addictions, including over-eating.

Carolyn has been in practice for over three decades. She notes that this experience, along with her years of formal training, really helps her provide an empathic supportive environment to help her clients develop the personal insight needed into their uniques source (s) of interpersonal, and/or intra-personal discomfort. This insight is critical in helping each client develop the best strategies possible to achieve an improved quality of life.
