Professional statement

Charlene Chan is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker serving New York and New Jersey. She specializes in depression, self-esteem, relationship issues, social anxiety, and recovery from trauma. Many of Charlene’s clients seek therapy because they struggle in their relationships and wonder if it may be tied to a harsh, critical parent and/or an emotionally absent one. Other clients seek therapy because they need support in asserting healthier boundaries, or they hope to process overwhelming events and emotions in a safe space. Charlene also works with couples who feel like they are stuck in the same loop within their arguments, or couples who are striving to rekindle their relationship.

After receiving her Masters in Social Work from New York University, Charlene completed psychodynamic psychotherapy training from the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of New York Counseling and Guidance Service. She also obtained her Certificate in EFT: Attachment Science in Practice. She collaborates with her clients to gain insight into better understanding themselves – she takes into consideration any pivotal moments throughout their lives, while also incorporating some solutions-oriented techniques to help with daily stressors. After treatment, clients have shared how therapy has helped them to see things more clearly, to understand their triggers more, and to feel in a healthier mental state.

Charlene believes in the transformative power of a strong therapeutic alliance, and she fosters a supportive, nurturing environment where clients can explore emotions and issues as they arise. Clients have described Charlene as being able to effortlessly put them at ease, especially if they are first-time therapy seekers, and that her empathetic responses and expressions help them to feel heard and understood.

Message to clients

If you're taking the time to review prospective therapists' profiles, you're taking that next step in prioritizing you. There might be something difficult going on in your life recently, or you may be struggling with something for a while now. Having a place where you can unload all these things you are carrying and share it with someone you feel connected with can help you to feel lighter – within your body and your mind.

Sometimes it can feel hard or scary to imagine taking that plunge into therapy. If you're feeling tentative, I think it can be helpful to just dip your toe in the water, see what it feels like, and take it at your own pace.

The therapeutic relationship is so unique because it's where you can just focus on you and know that it remains within the room. This compassionate support can be reparative in improving or accepting other relational aspects in your life, while you also work towards gaining insight in yourself. I invite you to schedule a consultation to see if I am the right fit for you. If we decide we are a good fit together, I will be a dedicated person in working with you on your goals; I will be a listening ear to find the threads within your life that you may not have noticed were there. I look forward to hearing from you!
