Professional statement

Charlene Collibee, PhD is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in Rhode Island with specialized training in working with college and graduate students, couples, and parents. Research shows our relationships with others are linked to our mental and even physical health throughout our lives. Therapy can help better understand these patterns, and empower you with the skills to improve your mental health and relationships together. We may be carrying the trauma of childhoods and past relationships into our current lives unknowingly. Dr. Collibee uses gold-standard research-based interventions, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), The Gottman Method, and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) approaches to help break unwanted patterns and empower you with the skills and tools for healthy fulfilling relationships with those around you. In recent years there’s been a breakthrough in research, demonstrating that often when you learn how to have better relationships you in turn feel less depressed, less anxious, and more able to enjoy the things that are important to you.

Dr. Collibee obtained her PhD from the University of Denver and completed postdoctoral training at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Her research and clinical work focused on the study of interpersonal relationships have been featured in top news and media outlets (i.e., NPR, The Times). She has published over 25 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals.

Message to clients

Our interpersonal relationships can be our source of greatest stress but also greatest joy. I work with college students, graduate students, couples of all ages and types, and new parents. We collaborate together to improve your relationships, understand your natural strengths, and meet your goals. My academic research focuses on how our relationships and past traumas shape us and our mental health across the lifespan and helps me bring cutting-edge treatment strategies to therapy.

For individual therapy, you’ll start with an initial therapy appointment where background information will be gathered to help me better understand your concerns and goals. Following this appointment, we will make a plan together that addresses how we will work toward your goals and how we’ll know you’re making progress. We will decide together how often therapy meetings should occur (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.). Throughout treatment we conduct research-based assessments and track your progress toward your best self.

During couples’ therapy, both partners attend sessions together to work on improving specific problems in their relationship. Common goals include improving intimacy, trust, boundaries, and communication. My therapeutic approach is non-judgmental and non-blaming. My research has demonstrated that individuals each bring important parts of themselves to the couple and these contributions shape reoccurring patterns in the relationship. If you are interested in addressing relationship concerns without your partner attending therapy sessions, individual therapy offers an opportunity to improve your relationships on your own.

You belong here. ♡
