Professional statement

Dani Gotwalt is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in San Fransisco, CA. She works with teenagers, young adults, and adults of all ages who come against barriers to living comfortable, happy lives. Many of Dani’s clients feel held back by previous traumas or attachment issues. They also face pressure to conform to societal norms and to engage with oppressive systems, which can lead to moral distress and emotional exhaustion. They begin working with Dani to better understand their emotions and to find ways to improve their lives.

Dani’s approach when working with a client in session starts with increasing self-awareness so that they can better understand what’s happening internally for them, particularly when facing uncomfortable emotions like anxiety or sadness. Dani encourages clients to tap into buried thoughts and beliefs to learn more about themselves and how they experience the world. She does this in a nonjudgmental, empathetic manner.

Dani earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from The Wright Institute. She enjoys helping clients find their authentic selves and live through this authenticity and vulnerability. She welcomes clients of all backgrounds and identities into her practice.

She sees clients weekly in person in San Francisco or online throughout California Tuesdays through Fridays.

Message to clients

Often clients seek therapy with me because they are experiencing a life transition — whether a loss, a change in relationship or family structure, or wanting to take a next step — and they are feeling uncertain about exactly what it is they want or how to go about taking action. This uncertainty can show up as stress, anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms. Does this resonate with your experience?

I believe you are the expert on what you are experiencing and I work in session to help you cultivate the wisdom that already resides within you. What does that look like? It looks like us studying an experience of yours and noticing what thoughts, feelings, body sensations, urges, images, memories arise, and and noticing what unfolds from there. I see what I do as more than just "talk" therapy: it's mindful, experiential, and body-attuned.

While I customize each session to what my particular client needs, I do like to bookend each session with an opening check in to gather your hopes for session or lead us in a grounding activity to enter into the therapy time, and then close out session by inviting you to reflect on what you want to take with you from session. As applicable, we may discuss ways you can embody and practice what you uncover in session throughout the week before our next session.

My hope for you is that you will leave therapy more at home with yourself and ready to take steps towards flourishing.
