Professional statement

Debbie Chirikos is a clinical social worker with a lifelong commitment to helping people find the solutions to pressing personal and situational stresses.

During this lifelong professional journey, Debbie has served populations in Canada, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, and Illinois as well as crisis deployments as a disaster mental health provider for the Red Cross. She served during hurricanes Iniki, Katrina and Rita.

With this breadth of experience over time, cultural exposure has broadened Debbie's appreciation for the strengths and perspectives of each individual and family. The social emotional challenges of children are a particular area of interest and experience. The needs of women who struggle with varied cultural and socio-economic challenges is another area of interest. The lasting effects of trauma and how it effects the lives of children and adults is a particularly common presentation to therapy, often hiding below the presenting problems that bring a client into treatment. Children experiencing attachment difficulties are an area of expertise. Adult children experiencing attachment struggles is a specialty area of treatment.

Message to clients

What brings you into therapy is a product of your unique life experience. therefore, what you need to move forward, resolve your pain and confusion into your best life will be found in yourself.

In therapy with me, I spend much time listening to you and with you, sorting out what your priorities are to resolve a problem. Doing this takes time and change. Changing must be a part of your therapeutic outcome. Whether you will be changing self-defeating habits, removing toxic people from your life, changing and resolving negative self-messages about your worth, we will map out and navigate that path together.

I want you to know I am a warm and welcoming therapist. Know this too, I love to laugh. Humor and levity has its place in therapy to gain a perspective on our "stuckness" and struggle. I want you to feel safe and supported in a judgment free environment. I will hold your feelings safely until you can manage them with more confidence. I will make suggestions and recommendations on how to make changes between sessions. I have to understand how you see the world and through what life lense you are operating. I am sympathetic and compassionate. But I will also bring to your attention habits and patterns that are holding you back. I hope you like candor and enthusiasm.
