Professional statement

Deborah Cher is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist licensed in NYC. She works online with people in NYC and from all over the world and all walks of life, and those going through important life transitions. She has particular experience with gifted children and adults. Deborah works with men's and women's issues, teenagers and college-age people, and people in their 80s and beyond, as well as professionals, creatives and academics.

She offers psychodynamic psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, talk therapy and symbol-based self-exploration. She is comfortable in many faith based settings, from Christian, to Jewish to Buddhist and Yogic.

With a background in psychoanalysis, the arts, philosophy, and academia, she takes a wholistic approach to therapy, with self-psychology as a basis to welcome each client in his or her entirety. Deborah works with empathy and mutuality, in a non-judgemental space to delve deeper into each person's psychic dynamics and entrenched patterns. The goal is to overcome blocks and depression, and experience more personal freedom, success, acceptance, satisfaction, self-understanding, creativity and contentment.

Message to clients

Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis can be instrumental in enhancing your self esteem, quieting depressive thoughts, unlocking your creativity, improving your relationships and helping you lead a happier, more fulfilling life. I lean toward a self-psychological approach that centers on mutuality, self inquiry and empathic encounter. I work with clients from all walks of life, including academics, artists, writers, executives, couples, people going through important life transitions, and people of different faiths, be it buddhist, Jewish, christian or secular-spiritual. I also work with children. One of my specialties is giftedness, at any age.

My psychoanalytic writing has been published in several peer reviewed journals, and by Oxford University Press. I am on the faculty at The National Institute for the Psychotherapies and at the Training Institute for Mental Health in NYC where I teach Dreams and Self Psychology. I bring to the work my own background as artist, writer, teacher, philosopher and scholar.

I value a holistic approach that works with each client as a multifaceted person seeking wholeness. It takes courage to get here. I look forward to connecting with you and sharing in your journey.
