Professional statement

Deborah Kass MS, LCSW completed a BS in Creative Arts Therapy from Northwestern University in 1983. Subsequently, in 1987 she earned a Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work from Columbia University as well as a Masters Degree in Special Education/Early Childhood from Bank Street College of Education. While in New York, Deborah trained at the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center and the Jewish Family Service. After moving to Portland Oregon, Deborah worked as a therapist in both Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry at Portland Adventist Medical Center.

Deborah began her private practice in 1990 and also spent over a decade as a full-time parent. She has completed 5 years of post-graduate training at the Oregon Psychoanalytic Institute where she met with patients 4 times weekly in supervised psychoanalysis. Deborah continues to work with patients in intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy and pursue independent study in relational psychoanalytic theory and practice.

As Director of PdxParenting and creator of the curriculum, "Kids Who Feel Smart," Deborah is available to provide research based parent education that promotes strong family relationships and resilient children. Using a contemporary understanding of temperament and developmental psychology, curriculum includes topics such as Building Self-Esteem, Sibling Rivalry and Teen Brain. More information about "Kids Who Feel Smart" is available on her website.

Message to clients

“Why do I feel stuck in my career?” “Why is it so hard to open up with my friends and partner?” “How can I help my child feel confident?” Psychotherapy is an opportunity to reclaim your future as well as help your children and family enjoy productive, loving relationships. Together, we develop a conversation focused upon understanding what interferes with your parenting or a sense of meaning in both your personal and professional life.

I enjoy a diverse psychotherapy practice working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. Whether playing with puppets or talking to adults, my goal is to foster an environment of curiosity and exploration. Meeting once a week or more frequently, psychotherapy offers a dynamic opportunity to live a more creative and fulfilling life.

By becoming intimate with your emotional landscape, you will feel more confident in your ability to manage relationships as well as life’s inevitable bumps and bruises. I invite you to arrange an initial phone call so that I can address your questions directly.
