Professional statement

Debra Flics is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and contemporary psychoanalyst with a private practice based in New York City. She has been engaged in contemplative practices for over 25 years, including serving as a meditation and yoga instructor. Debra is skilled at using both Eastern and Western approaches to healing mental and emotional suffering. She specializes in helping clients transform conditioned mental and emotional patterns so that they may live with more freedom, ease, authenticity, and awareness of the larger Self.

Debra’s approach to therapy is an integration of contemporary psychoanalysis, meditation practices such as mindfulness, parts meditation and awareness practices, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and Jungian dreamwork. Therapy thus becomes a shared meditation between Debra and her clients, in which clients learn to access and live from the deeper Self that is more attuned to wisdom and compassion.

Debra earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work from New York University in 1992. She completed postgraduate training in Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies in 1998. Debra completed Level 1 and 2 training in EMDR therapy in 2009. In addition to her therapy training, Debra has taught meditation at New York Insight Meditation Center, Downtown Meditation Community and privately.

Message to clients

I understand the courage and vulnerability that it takes to start therapy. It is courageous to turn and face what ails you in the presence of someone else. I truly get it. And for this reason, I will do my best to help you feel safe and secure so that you may freely share your concerns in a way that leads to real change.

I hope to help you dive deep into your inner life, clearly seeing how emotional knots have formed that may be detracting from your sense of aliveness. Many people have glimpsed this potential through meditation and other contemplative practices yet find it hard to maintain these shifts. Whether or not you have formally practiced meditation, you can think of our work together as a shared meditation into the depths of your self. There are many riches to be found here. .

Dream analysis can introduce you to the mystery of the psyche-often producing a message tailor made for you. EMDR can help to integrate old traumas and negative self beliefs so that you no longer feel stuck in the past. Meditation can help free somatic knots and give you an experience of the larger Self that holds all experience.

I’ve seen that while suffering, confusion, and discomfort may be the impetus for beginning therapy it can become the catalyst for a life of meaning, purpose, and greater awareness. I look forward to accompanying you on your journey.
