Professional statement

Edmond Otis is a licensed psychotherapist with over 28 years of experience. He works with a broad range of clients who are dealing with issues related to; anxiety & stress, relationships & communication, depression, motivation & performance, self-confidence and self-belief, and past or current life-choices.

Edmond has taught and developed university graduate courses on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Therapeutic Rapport, Sport Psychology, and The Psychology of Health. He maintains a small, on-line, private practice as he also speaks, teaches, and consults on; resilience & stress, relationship styles, team-building, peak performance, improving critical outcomes, conflict & negotiation, and goal acquisition.

From research, and experience, Edmond recognizes that three broad factors; Anxiety, Coping Skills, and Self-esteem, are important to our resolving almost every psychological, emotional, or interpersonal challenge we face. He's written:

“Anxiety is a natural part to the human experience. Unavoidable, really. Since humans are able to think about the future – it’s also natural that we spend time worrying about it. However, when anxiety becomes overwhelming it can negatively affect our health, our thoughts, our emotions, our behavior, and the decisions we make”.

“Coping Skills are also key. Again, from my training, experience, and research. I'm personally, and professionally, very interested in our being able to use the natural skills and strengths we are all born with – but often lose site of - when we face challenging situations.”

“Self-esteem also contributes. Basically, it’s how we feel about ourselves. But also – do we have our own back? If we can improve our self-esteem, we often get better outcomes. And when we get better outcomes - we improve our self-esteem. The trouble is that it works in reverse as well. Low self-esteem often leads to poor outcomes – and those poor outcomes often serve to re-enforce our low self-esteem.”

Message to clients

Hi. My name is Edmond Otis, and I look forward to working with you. I feel that my main strengths as a therapist are empathy, insight, acceptance, and a real understanding of the confusing disconnect that frequently occurs between our thoughts and our emotions.

Starting with our first session, as we introduce ourselves to each other, we'll try to determine how I can be the most helpful to you. What are the main challenges you're facing? How do you understand what you are experiencing? Do you understand it? What needs to change?

Also, and this is really important for both of us - what are your goals for therapy? How will we know that our work together is being effective and useful? And if it is useful, how will things be different? Better?

Finally, when it's useful, I feel that I have the capability to help clients develop an "outcome focus" - which enables them reach the goals they want to reach - by making the changes they need to make.

Also, sometimes I'm funny.
