Professional statement

Elizabeth Childs, MS, LMHC, LMT, SEP is a somatically integrative psychotherapist, dually licensed in both psychotherapy and therapeutic bodywork. Her work is informed by polyvagal theory, attachment theory and the latest research on trauma and the body.

Elizabeth practices Somatic Psychotherapy, a psychodynamically oriented therapy that respects the wisdom of the body. Integrating somatic work into talk therapy is an effective way to help with regulating the nervous system and increasing physical and mental resilience.

A Certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner since 2013, Elizabeth has advanced training and over 35 years of experience in numerous bodywork systems.

She spent 17 years as Senior Massage Therapist and Somatic Experiencing Practitioner at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, supporting cancer patients and their caregivers and educating other therapists.

Elizabeth integrates and teaches the use of touch modalities when appropriate with Somatic Experiencing to help in healing trauma and chronic traumatic stress.

As a former professional jazz musician and vocalist, Elizabeth welcomes patients who love the arts and who may want to explore their own possibilities for creativity.

Message to clients

To me, a therapist is an advocate and a trustworthy ally who can guide and support you to live your deepest truth.

A therapist is someone to help you find your unique path and then stay on it.

Someone to help you live the life you're meant to live. You may want to examine existing family relationships with help to reframe them, to understand them and yourself better. You may want help dealing with anxiety about career, relationships, whether to have children, dealing with parenting, or dealing with our culture. Depression might be weighing you down, perhaps recurring anger is an issue. These are things therapy can help with. I have experience helping clients with these issues.

If you are curious about learning more about how we work with the body in therapy, I recommend these two books; “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel van der Kolk and “Waking the Tiger” by Peter Levine.

You can visit my website, SomaticExperiencing.nyc for more information about this work.

I invite you to give me a call or send me an email if you’d like to learn more or schedule a consult.
