Emily Perraut has her MA in Clinical Psychology (2011) and is deeply passionate about her work as a trauma therapist. She is also a highly sensitive person, an animal lover, and an avid gardener who is available to work virtually-only.
She understands that our psychology is a consequence of our physiology, and therefore employs bottom-up modalities, like Brainspotting, to help shift underlying stress physiology in order to resolve trauma and to also improve both physical and mental health and well-being. She understands the havoc that trauma and stress can wreak on our bodies, minds, and relationships.
It is not uncommon that people come to work with her after trying other, more top-down therapies, such as traditional talk-therapy, and other more cognitively focused therapies. While these therapies can be helpful at times, they don't address underlying stress and trauma physiology, which can keep us stuck and make it hard to follow-through with the behavioral changes we genuinely want to make. Trying talk-therapy, or any therapy, can be a wonderful step towards growth and healing, but it will only get you so far without an experienced, intuitive, attuned, trauma-trained practitioner who knows how to skillfully help you work with your body and nervous system.
Emily works from a systems perspective and acknowledges the role of systemic oppression, discrimination, privilege, and prejudice on the many symptoms people come to therapy with. She also believes that this deep trauma work is an integral step towards building the capacity to imagine and create more just, equitable, and peaceful communities. She works very collaboratively and aims to practice through a depathologizing and decolonized lens and is committed to the life-long work of being anti-racist, in addition to working to unlearn the internalized BS from the many other "isms."

Anxiety - Coping with and decreasing excessive worry, nervousness, or stress. Excessive anxiety and worry is often a symptom of unresolved trauma and nervous system dysregulation, which can be caused by some of the following: childhood emotional neglect, attachment trauma, dysfunctional family dynamics, oppression and colonization, patriarchy, etc. I view anxiety as a legitimate survival response, and together we can work to help your system discern threat vs safety.
Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse, in addition to experiencing relational and attachment traumas, and systemic oppression, which can greatly impact us.
Women's issues - Therapy tailored to common concerns among women; providing a safe and understanding space to address life challenges, stressors, and questions around identity as a woman. Understanding the broader systems we are impacted by.
Mind-body connection - Practicing mindfulness to draw together how the body feels physically and how the mind feels mentally; healing both physically and mentally. Brainspotting is a powerful, yet gentle form of focused mindfulness. Including the body and working with the nervous system in therapy makes a world of difference for reasons we can get into in session.
Sensitivity - Developing an understanding of your highly sensitive (HSP) nature, including exploring your feelings about your sensitivity, exploring challenges and gifts related to your sensitivity, and including ways to cope with sensitivity in a highly over-stimulating world, and in cultures that value sensitivity differently. Additionally, learning self-compassion and other skills to cope can be helpful.
Shame - Exploring how toxic shame shows up in one’s life and the origins of this shame, especially in specific situations or environments. Often, toxic shame IS the trauma. Shame is a survival response and I can help you work through shame in a gentle, sensitive, compassionate way so that it no longer holds you back from loving and expressing yourself.
