Professional statement

Emily Zibell is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Counselor in the Chicagoland area. She specializes in the treatment and care of adults (18+) with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder.

Emily comes from a background of working for many years in an outpatient behavioral health hospital setting treating adults with mood disorders. This experience has given her the opportunities to specialize in acute mental health crises and gather numerous coping skills and techniques to assist clients in regaining their functioning and becoming the best version of themselves, regardless of the diagnosis or stressor.

She uses a therapy approach that combines many different techniques but focuses primarily on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT). Her goal is to work with her clients where they are at and allow them to be active participants in their therapy process. She likes to include existential and philosophical conversations into her practice about why we do what we do and how to make the world a better place alongside psychoeducation and coping skills. Along side all of this, she's found that humor, compassion, and lightheartedness are some of the most important parts to the therapeutic relationship.

Currently she is seeing clients exclusively through Telehealth. She's found this has been the most effective way to serve her clients in a post-pandemic world. In the future, she does hope for a dual approach that involves in-person therapy.

Message to clients

Looking for a therapist can be one of the most difficult parts of the therapeutic process. Finding a stranger to share some of your most difficult thoughts and stories with is a huge step, so it's important to first acknowledge that. You should be proud of yourself for starting this process.

Therapy can be the space to make large life changes or become a space to process the day to day events and stresses we all experience but need an extra empathetic ear for. The therapeutic relationship can be a collaborative environment to work towards your goals and remind yourself that you are important and deserving of care and compassion, regardless of what is going on in your life.
