Professional statement

Erin Mills is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, based in New York City with roots in Alabama, and available to see clients remotely in both states. Erin is trained in psychodynamic and third-wave cognitive behavioral therapies, and works with a humanistic and existential perspective, but believes in tailoring therapy to fit you.

Her practice is holistic, LGBTQ+ affirming, and employs a non-pathologizing and harm reduction lens. She frequently works with people experiencing problems in relationships, loneliness, depression, self-sabotaging behavior, and seeking a greater sense of meaning, purpose and connection in their lives.

Erin trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy in Karen Horney Clinic's 2 Year Fellowship program, and completed her Masters in Social Work at Columbia University. She sees adults of all ages for individual therapy. She is in-network with Aetna & Cigna, and can provide superbills to submit to insurance for reimbursement.

Message to clients

Therapy can be challenging - it takes courage to look directly at parts of ourselves that we may struggle with. Going through this process with someone who gets you can be transformative. I'm deeply curious about how you see the world and work to create an environment where you can be, too. Together, we can look at the patterns in your life that feel unsatisfying, and work together to find better ways to manage your life and feelings.

Maybe you have learned to cope with feelings in ways that are hurting you or your relationships. Maybe you're struggling with a tendency to isolate or hurt yourself, with self-hatred, with long-term patterns that you feel hopeless about. Or maybe you just want to feel more joy and connection in your life. Every person has a unique ability to change & grow. The goal of therapy is to remove obstacles to your growth.

Growth and change are a lifelong process - not a perfect destination! Maybe you have been told that you are too much, or that you should "get over it." How you feel makes sense in light of your experiences. We're all doing the best we can do to cope with the world we have. I believe the relationship is the most important factor in what works in therapy, and invite you to be an active participant - let's work together on your goals.
