Professional statement

Erin Newman is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker providing online therapy to clients in New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. As a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Registered Yoga Teacher, Erin offers a holistic approach to substance use challenges and trauma recovery. Erin has particular expertise in working with young adults around the transition in and out of college, when difficult experiences from the past may reemerge and lead to challenges in coping with mood, anxiety, and relationships.

Erin stays up-to-date on the top evidence-based therapies. She is a certified EMDR therapist as well as certified Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) provider. Erin also utilizes Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) and mindfulness practices. She often incorporates body-based approaches as well, such as breathing exercises and meditations, to help clients soothe busy minds by tapping into the wisdom of the body.

Prior to private practice, Erin worked with adolescents and young adults navigating addiction challenges at Massachusetts General Hospital outpatient program. She received her Master’s in Social Work from Boston University and her Bachelor of Arts from Boston College, and is excited to welcome adults of all ages to her practice.

Message to clients

Whether this is your first time seeking therapy, or you have engaged in therapy in the past, we will work together toward cultivating the self-awareness and tools you need to make lasting change. My belief is that you already have everything you need to be your best self and live a full and meaningful life. If you’re reading this, it’s likely you’ve encountered some obstacles in your path. Maybe it’s difficulty coping with a transition, or feeling unsure about 'What’s next?' Maybe you struggle with painful emotions or a depressed mood. Maybe you have suffered a loss or a trauma. Whatever brings you to therapy now, my role is to provide a safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings and help you get unstuck from the patterns of thinking and behavior that are no longer serving you.
You are doing the best you can. I truly believe that. And you have likely developed ways of pushing away a difficult past or challenging emotions that are simply not working for you any longer. Not to worry, therapy is not about diving headfirst into the deep end of your pain and suffering. Rather, it’s about gently (and with loads of self compassion!) helping you learn and practice the skills you need for tolerating and being with your experience so that you can better understand it and move forward. With self awareness comes choice, and with choice the ability to learn new ways of coping with the stressors life throws your way.
We will work collaboratively on developing a plan that will help you reach your goals. We will discuss the pace, frequency of visits, and duration of treatment. I tend to be very active in session, so if you have had the experience of 50 minutes of nodding and ‘mm-hm’ you will not get that here! I will listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions to help you challenge long held thoughts and beliefs and explore different perspectives. I use humor when appropriate (yes, you can laugh in therapy!) and will offer direct feedback (with your permission of course!) I am not perfect, don’t have all the answers, and so do not expect that from you!
