Professional statement

Gary Meier is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Midtown, Manhattan with over two decades of experience. He specializes in addiction, including both substance use and behavioral addictions, anxiety, depression, spirituality and religion, and self-esteem.

Many of Gary’s clients are young adults and/or members of the LGBTQIA community. He is especially passionate about the intersection between religion and sexuality, including helping clients reconcile their identity with their family’s or their own religious beliefs. His goal is to help his clients come to a place of acceptance and develop new “internal voices” that promote acceptance and self-love.

Gary takes a person-centered approach while utilizing other approaches depending on what his clients’ needs and goals are.  He makes a concerted effort to understand what the client needs. For example, some individuals want to understand their symptoms while others just want to feel better. This helps him decide if he is going to take a more insight or solutions-focused approach.

Gary offers a safe, compassionate environment where clients can speak about whatever is on their mind. Prior to going into private practice, he was a pastoral counselor for 15 years. He received his MEd from the University of Missouri Saint Louis. His office is conveniently located near the 34 St. - Herald Sq. subway station.  Gary wants to make sure that everyone who needs therapy is able to receive it.  That’s why he works with clients on a sliding scale to help them find a way to fit therapy into their budget.  He looks forward to meeting you.
