Professional statement

Professional Statement:

Gene is a clinical social worker with an MSW degree from Fordham University. He did a 3-year externship at The Ackerman Institute for Family and Couples in NYC. He has trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT) and also in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) for working with all types of trauma in individuals. In addition to his private practice, Gene has spent years working as an adolescent mental health counselor and consultant for families and teens in NYC schools.

Gene’s has 25+ years working couples and individuals looking for a more productive and fulfilled way of being in their life - in their home, social, and school or professional lives without the obstacles of depression, anxiety, addictions, interpersonal conflict, unhappy relationships, and trauma from abuse, neglect, racism, sexism, and homophobia.

He uses an eclectic model in work with clients. His preferred model in working with teens, young adults, and adults is AEDP which seeks to address rapidly the core feelings being masked by defenses such as putting others’ needs before their own, sadness, depression, addictions, anger/rage, anxiety disorders, and more. The base of Gene’s work with couples is to create a healthy stable of tools to hone communication skills. He also uses the EFT model for working with couples, helping them to see and feel the emotional journey that their partner brings to the relationship, invariably leading to greater closeness and intimacy. Gene believes that creating an atmosphere of trust and support for teenagers while normalizing, not pathologizing, their feelings are key to the work.

Gene’s office is located in Midtown East Manhattan, 2 blocks from Grand Central Station. He sees clients in person and remotely. (Covid vaccinations required for in-person work.)

Message to clients

Today you are one step closer to a new you where you feel empowered and on a positive path to growth and well-being.

As a solution-focused therapist with training in EFT for couples (Emotionally Focused Therapy) and AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) for work with individuals, my goal is to use a finely-honed repertoire of therapeutic tools to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can identify them and work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. Both of the modalities mentioned above address the core feelings that trigger crippling defenses, e.g., trauma of all types big and small, addictions, depression, anxiety, putting the feelings of others before your own. The most recent studies in neuroscience validate vividly that optimal health is achieved through the integration of mind and body. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

If you're looking for guidance through a challenging situation or relationship or you're just ready to move in a new direction in your life, I look forward to working with you !
