Gentry Gibson is a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LMHC) with offices in downtown Brooklyn and Manhattan. She works with individual adults of all ages and with couples. Many of Gentry’s clients come in to address anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship difficulties, and career path changes.
Gentry is particularly passionate about serving young adults (18-35), who may find themselves at crossroads of decision-making related to school, career path, relationships, and family or are experiencing other stressors in those areas of life. Gentry has advanced training in the area of anxiety disorders (social anxiety, generalized anxiety, panic, and obsessive-compulsive disorder) and in leadership/career development, and she provides individuals and couples with the support and tools to move into the activities and ways of being that they highly value.
Gentry's style is active, engaging, and goal oriented. Her approach is informed by cognitive behavior therapy and also existential-humanistic philosophy (with reflection in such areas as freedom, responsibility, meaning/values, isolation/disconnection). She'll help you explore how your thoughts about, or interpretations of, life events or yourself are affecting your emotions, behaviors, and bodily reactions and then support you in shifting those perceptions toward a healthier perspective or in taking constructive action. She'll also create with you new behaviors to try out in session through role-play/script-writing or in your daily life as a way of gathering new information about yourself and your predictions. Sometimes mindfulness practices will be implemented to build skills toward greater acceptance of thoughts and feelings. Concrete practices, like mindfulness, centering exercises, journaling, self-inventory worksheets, or new behaviors to try, are developed collaboratively with her clients each week as a means of support and continuity between sessions and to further work toward goals.
