Gina Underwood is a licensed clinical social worker and certified cognitive behavioral therapist. She works with adults of all ages. Many of Gina’s clients seek her out to address stress, anxiety, life transitions, women's issues (including related to the US culture) and relationship challenges. Gina is particularly passionate about collaborating with Moms, journalists, lawyers and other legal professionals, professional women and anyone challenged by perfectionistic tendencies. She also has advanced training in the area of anxiety.
Gina is trained in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as mindfulness and compassion practices. With CBT, we examine automatic thoughts and beliefs, then use practical strategies to modify them, thereby also shifting feelings and behaviors. In session, Gina focuses on breathing exercises, grounding strategies, self-compassion and modifying automatic thoughts, beliefs and behaviors through collaborative experimentation. Her individualized approach supports clients to feel more relaxed, present and confident.
Gina's style is collaborative, active and non-judgmental. Therapy with Gina begins by exploring clients' strengths and challenges. Then, collaboratively set goals. For clients with existing spiritual practices, these supports can sometimes be woven into therapy.
In addition to private practice, Gina has most recently worked at a Department of Justice Employee Assistance Program. She also has experience at a community mental health center, psychiatric emergency room, inpatient psychiatric hospital, and, in the distant past, worked as a paralegal in NYC and Louisville. For her free time and self-care, she enjoys photography, browsing in bookstores and reading, walks in nature, kick scootering with her daughter and time connecting with friends. Gina offers both in-person and telehealth sessions in Kentucky. She regularly offers telehealth sessions in DC as well as occasional in-person appointments at 1629 K St, NW.
