Professional statement

Note: As of November 2019, Henny's practice is located in Boston, not Brooklyn.

Henny Stern is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who offers therapy both remotely and in-person in Boston, MA. She specializes in trauma recovery, the mind-body connection, and has a particular expertise in working with clients who have experienced domestic violence or abuse.

Henny has training in Somatic Therapy, which involves helping clients become more attuned to their bodies and how it affects their mental health and emotions. Her approach is holistic and integrative and is guided by a trauma-informed approach. She helps her clients slow down and become more aware of what triggers their symptoms. She also uses the client-therapist relationship to inform her on the best treatment plan.

Henny believes that all trauma can be reversible if tapped into the right therapy and tools. She ultimately wants to empower her clients to learn how to listen to their body and develop a set of healthy coping strategies.

Message to clients

Most of us inhabiting this planet go through periods in our lives where we feel overwhelmed by our circumstances, relationships, emotions, life transitions, career, etc. You are not alone and there is nothing wrong with you. This is a part of life, living, and being truly alive! When we can feel pain, we know our nerves are working...for us. And perhaps steering us in a new direction. As a trauma informed psychotherapist, I practice therapy with a mind-body/bottom-up approach, with the understanding that our body has an infinite amount of wisdom to guide us in healing our body mind and soul. When we learn how to slow down our body to access our innate wisdom, we then have an opportunity to heal the past, enjoy the present, and feel confident about the future. Integrating both art and science, I work together with my clients to reach their goals in ways that feel joyous, supportive, and comforting.
I also offer Clinical Social Work Supervision that is designed to enhance your clinical and professional skills, knowledge, and attitudes in order to achieve competency in your Social Work identity and in providing quality clinical care.

Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse

Anxiety - Coping with excessive worry, nervousness, or stress; intense discomfort in social settings (social anxiety); sudden and intense feelings of panic (panic disorder)

Relationship issues - Understanding one’s wants and needs in relationships; exploring patterns of interaction, codependency, and strengthening satisfaction and interdependence in relationships and dating

Complex trauma - Overwhelming responses in the present as a result of past experiences such as physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect, growing up in a chaotic or stressful family

Developmental trauma - Childhood trauma such as chronic abuse, neglect and other Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE.) When a child is exposed to overwhelming stress and their caregiver does not help reduce this stress, or is the cause of the stress, the child experiences developmental trauma.

Domestic violence - Caring support along the pathway to safety, wellbeing, and healing for those surviving a partner’s abusive attempts to control one’s thoughts, beliefs, and actions

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - Healing painful experiences and memories from the past

Somatic therapy - All feelings have a body component and sometimes the body holds important information in physical symptoms; works with a body process orientation that can provide a way to work with somatic symptoms including tension, pain and fatigue and the emotions that come with those feelings

Depression - Providing support and promoting healing of hopelessness, low motivation and energy, sadness, irritability, sleep disturbance, and loss of interest and pleasure in life

Clinical supervision - The supervisor-supervisee relationship is an interactive relationship, in which there is openness and trust on both sides. Clinical Social Work supervision is an ongoing and evolving process which aims to strike a balance between developing Social Work and Clinical skills into your individual voice, while understanding and mastering the administrative components of Social Work; all the while preparing for your foray into the practice of Clinical Social Work
