Professional statement

James Marrugo is a Licensed Professional Counselor Candidate in Denver Colorado. He works with adults ages 18 to 65 of all ethnic, racial, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds. James’s clients come in when there are struggles regarding anxiety, depression, cultural adjustment, men’s health, self-esteem, or stress management.

James is trained in Gestalt Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Multicultural Counseling. During a session, James focuses on bringing emotions to the present moment to encourage mindfulness of the emotional self. This approach supports clients to increase mastery of the emotional, physical, and social self to increase self-confidence in the face of adversity.

James’s style is described as compassionately honest. When a client first comes in, James emphasizes building a relationship to facilitate having open and honest communication. James is dedicated to providing an honest, caring, and accepting relationship. James holds a BA in Psychology from Metropolitan State University of Denver since 2016 and a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Regis University since 2020. James has clinical experience in addiction, trauma, co-occurring disorders, personality disorder, sex traffic victims, and general mental health concerns.

Message to clients

I started my private practice so that I can use my skills and knowledge to help others live the life they want. I learned that people often go to therapy confused and struggling between what they should be doing and what they want to be doing. The goal of talking to me is to get you closer to what you want out of life. It is my desire to help every person create a roadmap to success by being more authentic and honest with who they are deep down inside. It is easy to fall into a trap of making everyone around us happy and lie to ourselves every day that the life people believe we should have, is the life we want.

I found a passion to help others achieve happiness through honesty by first being honest with myself, and I bring this honesty into every session. I am not the type of therapist to sit across from you and only say things you want to hear. I want to have an honest conversation with you which requires me to be blunt at times, but I do so with respect, acceptance, and compassion. My role as your therapist is to shine a light into the blind spots of your life so that we can discover the tools you need to build a happy and successful future.
