Professional statement

In working with clients, James seeks to help people understand themselves and how they fit into their world more fully. His professional and clinical experience has focused on questions of gender and sexuality, identity development, trauma and abuse, sex and sexual relationships, faith and spirituality, and working with parents and families of gender-creative children. As a therapist, his goal is to support all of who you are - individually, relationally, and in community.

James believe that every person is the expert of their own experience. You know what has worked for you and what has not, and he believes that with the right support you can know what will work for you in the future. Instead of telling you what you should or should not do, the focus of therapy is exploring all the options available to you and empowering you to chose the one that will serve you the best. Additionally, this work focuses on the skills and resources you already have at your disposal instead of looking only on the problem. By taking a holistic approach, you can consider all the angles and possibilities available to you based on where you are starting from. This way, instead of focusing on behaviors or finding the “right” decision, James will help you look at who you are as a person and how your unique approach to life can be used for your benefit.

Beginning in a community counseling setting, James has worked in diverse settings including medical and mental health hospitals, psychiatric in- and out-patient programs, court ordered and forensic settings, mental health agencies, and now private practice. In addition to completing specialized trainings in his areas of expertise, he has also presented trainings and taught classes himself in these areas to other mental health and human services professionals.

James' office is based conveniently in central Denver, minutes away from Capitol Hill and Washington Park. The location offers ample parking and close access to both public transport and the Cherry Creek Trail. Sessions are offered in-person, remote, and by telephone, beginning with a free 30-minute consultation and continuing with a specialized treatment plan with you based on your personal goals and objectives. Using all the tools and resources available to help you reach your goals, we will work together to find the best approach for you. If you have reached a point in your life that you are seeking insight, direction, or support as you walk your path, please reach out.

Message to clients

Growing up, I always knew that I was different. Intuitive, creative, sensitive and emotional, I knew that I didn't fit the mold I was given but I could not understand why. Through engaging with my own experience of gender and sexuality, I was able to figure out how all the pieces of myself fit together and enable me to live fully and authentically in my world.

As a therapist, I work with others who feel that they do not fit - those of us who have felt discomfort in ourselves, in our families, in our communities. I believe that in order to truly understand who we are and who we want to become, we must explore the experiences that we’ve had and look at the impact they have had on us. Once we understand what we have to work with, we are free to chose the best ways to move forward on the journey.

Sex therapy & sexual health - Addressing emotional, physical, and biological concerns related to sexual intimacy and functioning; education and skill building around topics such as erectile dysfunction, orgasms, low libido, shame, and history of abuse; improving communication to realize a fulfilling sex life

Relationships - Understanding one’s wants and needs in relationships; exploring patterns of interaction, addressing concerns, and strengthening satisfaction in relationships and dating

Trauma - Coping and healing after threatening or scary events, such as witnessing accidents or experiencing sexual, verbal, emotional, or physical abuse
