Professional statement

Dr. Jennifer Howell has over 10 years of experience in providing effective, evidence-based treatment to adults and couples. She has received expert training and certification in CBT and ACT-based treatments for trauma, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, and relationship issues. Dr. Howell's professional experience includes serving as a predoctoral intern at the Lexington, KY VAMC, a postdoctoral resident at the VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System in Hawaii, a staff psychologist at the National Center for PTSD, and a staff psychologist and Evidence-Based Psychotherapy Co-Coordinator at the Charleston VA Medical Center. Further, Dr. Howell has received expert training in Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) and in several partner-assisted approaches for couples coping with PTSD, chronic illness, and caregiving dynamics.

Dr. Howell approaches every client with openness and curiosity--she believes everyone is unique and that treatment must be tailored to the individual for it to be effective. Successful therapy is a team effort between the therapist and the client--and as such, Dr. Howell prioritizes creating a comfortable environment where clear communication and trust are established. Dr. Howell has years of experience in implementing effective treatment in a virtual format, finding that it makes therapy more accessible for individuals with young children, busy jobs, and/or transportation limitations. She is based in Asheville, NC, licensed in NC and HI, and a member of PSYPACT, allowing her to provide virtual services individuals and couples living in 32 states of the U.S.

PLEASE NOTE: due to insurance credentialing rules, Dr. Howell can only accept insurance for patients living in NC and HI; patients in all other states are private pay. All couple therapy sessions are private pay regardless of location.

Message to clients

I believe the best outcome of therapy is graduating from therapy--due to accomplishing goals and genuinely feeling better. It is important to me to help my clients understand exactly where they are in the therapy process, the reasoning behind the treatment work we do, and to feel safe discussing any obstacles to treatment progress with me. At the conclusion of treatment, I want my clients to be able to enjoy life in the ways that are important to them. Collaboration, humor, forthrightness, and authenticity are cornerstones of my interpersonal style in the therapy space. I encourage all prospective clients to reach out for a free consultation so we can explore how we can work together.
