Jen Johnston is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Hamden, CT who specializes in providing evidence-based, effective, and compassionate treatment to individuals navigating depression, anxiety, gender and sexual identity, self-harm, and life transitions including college and graduate school. Clients generally come to see her for support in managing their emotions or actions more effectively or in understanding themselves and their identity more fully. She sees adolescents and adults across the lifespan. In addition to offering in-person sessions, she sees clients living in CT and MA remotely.
Since many of Jen’s clients come to her looking for support in regulating their emotions, she frequently utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Having had extensive training in DBT, she is able to skillfully apply this therapy to many different areas. She gets to know her clients before developing an individualized treatment plan that takes into account their history and goals. Her sessions are focused on making changes in thought patterns and behaviors and learning new, healthy ways to cope effectively.
Jen works from a gender and sexuality-affirming stance. She helps her clients explore what being queer means to them and what it means to live an authentic life. Her goal is to offer a supportive environment for individuals to discover their identity.
Jen is warm and straightforward, and she strives to deeply connect with her clients, so they feel comfortable opening up to her. Outside of private practice, she is on a DBT consultation team. She received her MA from Boston University. She looks forward to meeting you.
